Belgian Strong Ale

The Belgian Strong Ale style takes Belgian pale ales to a new level of alcohol punch. They are typically straw-colored and produce huge mounds of foam in the goblets in which they are usually served.

Belgian strong ales don't immediately provide the powerful impact that one expects from high-ABV beers. Instead, it is more like the Velvet Hammer Effect, where one really feels it when getting out of the chair after the first few sips.

Duvel is one of the classic Belgian strong ales. Others include: Delirium Tremmens, La Chouffe, and Piraat. There are domestic examples as well: Lucky Monk Grale and North Coast Brewing Grand Cru.
